i am now 24 weeks... crazy how time flies... baby is only 22 weeks. baby measures about 8-9 inches from crown to rump and weighs about 1 and a quater pound. wow.
if baby was born right now... today, baby would have a 1 in 4 or 5 chances of survival... it's not a great statistic, but if baby decided to be born today, i'd take it. baby is still quite thin and covered in fine body hair. the body is starting to produce white blood cells to fight infection. (good!) the lungs have developed just enough to give baby a chance of surviving in a neonatal intensive care unit, but continues to practice breathing by inhaling amniotic fluid into his developing lungs. airway passages form tubes in order to take in and expel air. blood vessels and air sacs start to develop in the lungs - these will eventually exchange oxygen and circulate it to all parts of the body. the cells in baby's lungs begin to produce surfactant, a substance that keeps the sacs from sticking together.
it's amazing what has developed and is still developing, im sure i could post everyday the new tings that are happening in my tummy, and there would never be any repeats. im a cloning machine... basically. if only scientists would leave baby making to humans and animals... by nature. now thats a different post all together... my thought on science and birth, later to come...
